The Greatest Reward

Well, friends, I had an idea of where this week’s blog was going…then a conversation on Saturday took my thoughts in a completely different direction.
It was a busy day at the store when a customer came up to me and said she was a friend of Elaine’s. Elaine had asked her to do a favor. Now, I have to confess, I don’t remember the friend’s name, but I knew exactly which Elaine she meant. Elaine Tharington was a former nurse who often traveled to California to visit family. She also enjoyed designing, and I hadn’t seen her in a while.

Sometimes customers move away, or life gets busy, and we don’t see them as often. You always hope they’ll come back through the door so you can catch up.
Her friend told me that Elaine had passed away from breast cancer. Before she passed, Elaine had asked her to please tell Doris how much she appreciated me and the store; that I had always been helpful and encouraging.

Oh my. In the middle of that busy Saturday, those words meant so much.
It made me think about all the friends from the store who have passed away. I miss them. It makes me sad to know they won’t be coming through our door again, but I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to meet them, know them, and love them.

We spend a lot of time here talking about yarn, patterns, and whatever project has caught our attention this week. Somewhere along the way, we also share pieces of our lives. And the people we first meet as customers become friends.
That is my greatest reward of being at Yarn Store Boutique, and I’m sure Julie would agree.

Elaine, thank you for making sure your message found its way to me. I’m so grateful you were part of our store and my life.
Hugs & Kisses
Doris
