Yesterday afternoon, I had one of those little "lightbulb" moments.
You know how there are things you do so often that you forget they aren't common knowledge? We all have them. The skills we've picked up over the years become second nature, and before long we assume everyone else knows them too.
Well... not so much.
I was teaching a short workshop on How to Block. I thought it would be a quick class covering the basics. Instead, it turned into one of those wonderful conversations that reminds me exactly why I opened Yarn Store Boutique.

As I shared tips, tricks, and lessons I've learned over the years (along with a little research to back it all up), I could see lightbulbs going off all around the room. There were lots of "I never knew that!" moments. Questions led to more questions, and before I knew it, the conversation shifted from blocking to the yarn itself.
"Can you teach us more about fibers?"
Well... if you know me, you know you just asked one of my favorite questions!
Next to blocking, I absolutely love talking about fiber content, the properties of different yarns, and why they behave the way they do. Why does one wool bloom beautifully while another stays crisp? Why does cotton drape differently than linen? Why do some fibers soften after washing while others become stronger? What does "superwash" really mean? Why does your finished sweater sometimes look completely different after blocking?
There is so much fascinating science hiding inside every skein of yarn.
Over the years I've written blogs about cotton, wool, superwash wool, and other fibers, but yesterday reminded me of something important.
Sometimes we simply need a refresher.
Sometimes hearing something a second—or third—time makes it finally click. And sometimes it's comforting to have a printed reference guide sitting beside your favorite knitting or crochet chair instead of trying to remember everything you heard in class.
Learning isn't about knowing everything. It's about adding one more piece to the puzzle each time.
So... I'm putting together another workshop dedicated entirely to fibers—their characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and how to choose the perfect yarn for the project you have in mind. I have to admit, I'm pretty excited about this one. I hope you'll join me for another adventure as we dive a little deeper into the beautiful world of fiber.
Now... on to a completely different topic!
Can you believe our country is preparing to celebrate 250 years?

What an incredible milestone.
For two and a half centuries, America has been a patchwork of people, cultures, traditions, stories, and dreams. In many ways, it reminds me of one of our favorite quilts, knitted throws, or crochet baby blankets. Every square is different. Every color has its own personality. Every stitch tells a story. Yet when they're all joined together, they create something much bigger than any one piece alone.
At Yarn Store Boutique, we celebrate that same idea every single day. People from all walks of life gather around our tables. Some knit. Some crochet. Some weave. Some are beginners, while others have been stitching for decades. We laugh together, encourage one another, solve problems together, and occasionally rip back a few rows together too.
Perhaps that's one of the things I love most about this community. Yarn doesn't care about age, occupation, politics, or where you came from. It simply brings people together, one stitch at a time.
As we celebrate 250 years of our nation's history, I'm grateful for the freedom to create, to teach, to learn, to laugh, and to gather with all of you in our little corner of the world.
Here's to new friendships, lifelong learning, beautiful fibers, perfectly blocked projects... and 250 years of stitching together the fabric of a nation. Happy July 4th.
Happy stitching, everyone!
